  1. The Professional Class is only open to Malaysian Citizens and Permanent Residents aged 17 and below (born on or after 31st July 2010).
  2. Previous Grand Prize Winner of SMYPC are not eligible.
  1. Category 1: Ages 11 & below (born on or after 1st Jan 2016).
  2. Category 2: Ages 12 to 14 (born between 1st Jan 2013 and 31st Dec 2015).
  3. Category 3: Ages 15 to 17 (born between 31st July 2010 and 31st Dec 2012).
  1. General Rules for All Rounds
    1. All performances must be from memory.
    2. Contestants must perform all repertoire pieces as stated in the application form. No changes or substitutions are allowed.
    3. Contestants are expected to wear formal attire during the competition.
    4. Works for solo piano only.
    5. Classical repertoire (Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Twentieth Century) are acceptable.
    6. Works by modern composers or those composed in the 21st century are not permitted.
    7. Original compositions, improvisations, concertos, transcription, are not permitted.
    8. Contestants must provide complete program details, including composer, title, key, catalog numbers (Op., No., Hob., K., etc).
    9. Repertoire cannot be changed after submission.
    10. Contestants must ensure their repertoire meets all competition guidelines. Non-compliance may result in mark deductions.
  2. Preliminary Round – Live Video Recording Audition
    1. One (1) Etude, and One (1) own-choice classical repertoire works.
    2. Duration: 8 to 10 minutes.
    3. Location: Steinway Gallery Petaling Jaya on designated date only.
    4. Continuous Live Recording, one take only, no re-takes or re-recording are not permitted.
    5. 6 minutes maximum warm-up before recording.
    6. Only the Top 10 contestants (regardless of categories) will be selected to the Final Round.
  3. Final Round – Live SMYPC Finals & Award Ceremony
    1. One (1) first movement of a Sonata (Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Clementi or Schubert) & Two (2) own-choice classical repertoire works (Repertoire from the Preliminary Round may be repeated.)
    2. Duration: 10 to 20 minutes.
    3. Location: Bentley Music Auditorium (Level 4, Wisma Bentley Music).
    4. The Grand Prize Winner will represent Malaysia at the 8th Steinway South-East Asia Pacific Regional Finals 2027.

  1. Eligibility and Participation
    1. Contestants may participate in only one class: Professional Class, Amateur Class, or Neu Class.
    2. Contestants must be non-professional pianists who do not perform for payment and are not represented by any agent or management.
  2. Registration and Communication
    1. Official communication will be conducted via Email and/or WhatsApp.
      • The submitted email address and WhatsApp number cannot be changed after submission.
      • Only one email address and one WhatsApp number will be used for all notifications.
      • No phone calls will be made.
    2. Contestants must bear their own transportation and accommodation costs.
    3. The competition fee is non-refundable under any circumstances, including withdrawal, disqualification, or inability to attend.
  3. Guardian and Supervision
    1. Contestants should be accompanied by an adult guardian for the duration of the competition. The guardian is fully responsible for the minor’s safety during all competition activities and related events.
    2. Only one parent or guardian may accompany the contestant during the warm-up.
  4. Competition Conduct
    1. Contestants will perform exclusively on a Steinway Grand Piano throughout the competition.
    2. Preliminary Round: Parent, guardian are not allowed entry during video recording.
    3. No audio or video recording of any competition performances is allowed.
    4. Video recording will be conducted exclusively by Steinway Representatives, no other recording devices are permitted.
    5. No food or beverages allowed in the competition venue.
    6. Adjudicators may request contestants to provide copies of the original scores for all works in their program.
    7. Abide by all rules and regulations of the competition.
    8. Failure to attend the competition on the assigned date and time will result in disqualification.
    9. Contestants must attend all official media events organized by the competition. Failure to participate without a valid reason may result in disqualification or forfeiture of the prize.
    10. Protect own valuables; organizer is not responsible for lost or damaged items.
  5. Judging and Adjudication
    1. All competitions are judged by the Adjudicator Panel.
    2. The Adjudicator shall assess contestants’ interpretative and pianistic skills, including musicality & artistry, technical mastery, adherence to the score, and stage presence.
    3. The Adjudicator reserves the right to stop a performance midway if the contestant violates competition rules, exceeds the allotted duration, or for other serious reasons deemed necessary.
    4. All assessments are confidential.
    5. The Adjudicator Panel has the final decision, and no correspondence or appeals will be entertained.
  6. Media, Marketing, and Amendments
    1. The Organizer retains full rights to use all recordings, images, and performances for promotional, educational, and commercial purposes without further compensation.
    2. Organizer reserves the right to amend rules and cancel or alter events due to force majeure.
  7. Prizes and Responsibilities
    1. Prize must be accepted as is, non-transferable.
    2. Winners must attend the award ceremony in person to receive their trophy and certificate. Attendance is mandatory, and winners are expected to follow all instructions provided by the organizer, which may include performing during the celebration concert or other event activities. Failure to comply may result in forfeiture of the trophy and certificate.
    3. Grand Prize Winner is responsible for passport or travel documents; inability to travel forfeits the prize.
